Reading Reflection:

What is fashion for you? and why are you interested in fashion?

Fashion for me does not merely mean beauty, but a medium that speaks about ourselves and our relationships with the surrounding worlds. It is an attitude of how we showcase ourselves, a co-relationship that reflects social and cultural forces. I am interested in fashion because I am interested in the outermost layer of human - the skin, and clothes, cosmetics, accessories that add to the skin. These external objects are not part of the human body, but all belong to what it means to have a body. They represent one’s identity, one’s attitude about the culture, and reflect how culture and social factors impact us.

What kinds of things do your clothing say about you and your values?

I prefer styles of clothes that are with unique designs, or clothes that can be easily matched. This may indicate that I value individuality and creativity, and practicality in my personal style.

What are your main learnings and takeaways from the readings?

I am very impressed by Ying Gao’s work. She excavates the potential of fashion and clothes – fashion in her hands is no longer about how and what we wear, but carries the function of discussing the future and the relationship between humans and technology. Her expression of fashion is as she said, “ the speculative design”. I was inspired by this potential she brings, and I realize that fashion can push the boundaries of rethinking the future of clothing and its impact of society. Fashion can be a powerful tool for exploring the world around us and imagining new possibilities.
